Photosynthesis

'PRODUCERS' Plants are given this name because of their ability to make their own carbohydrates, protiens and fats from simple inorganic chemicals.

They produce their own food using the chlorophyll in their leaves to capture the sun's light energy. They use the light energy to make glucose, used in respiration or converted into starch and stored.

Photosynthesis produces,

Photosynthesis requires,

Chlorophyll and light energy are not part of the reaction, but need to be present for photosynthesis to take place.

Word and symbol equation for Photosynthesis:

What limits Photosynthesis?

Respiration

Why do plants need to respire?

Plants respire for the same reason as animals, to unlock energy.

How do they do it?

Carbohydrate that is produced during photosynthesis and oxygen are used in the plants cells, to produce energy and carbon dioxide (waste product).

In terms of gases given in and taken out, respiration is the reverse to photosynthesis.

During the day when the plant respires and photosynthesises there is a two way traffic of both carbon dioxide and oxygen entering and leaving the plant.

During the night because of the low light levels only respiration takes place, oxygen is being taken in but not given out. Carbon dioxide is given out but not taken in.

plants produce more oxygen than what they use, and also use more carbon dioxide than they produce. Which is lucky for animals and humans, otherwise there would not be enough oxygen for us to breathe.
