Osmosis

Special type of diffusion- diffusion of water molecules through a partially permeanable membrane.

When there is a higher concentration of water on one side of the membrane, more molecules will pass to the other side than pass back. The result is a net transfer of molecules down the concentration gradient from the high concentration to the side of low concentration. The concentation in the low concentration side will rise.

When the concentration of water is the same on either side of a membrane, the movement of water will be the same in both directions. The net exchange of water is zero (the system is in equillibrium)

Osmosis is vitally important to plants, plants gain water via this process through their roots. osmosis is then used to move water into the plant cells, making them turgid, which holds the plant upright.

Particles continue to move from high concentration to low concentration as long as their is a concentration gradient.

Specialist growers and supplyers and ditributors of high quality salad cress to supermarkets, wholesalers, distributors and caterers.
