Mineral requirements of plants
Plants need a number of nutrients for healthy growth, absorbed as minerals, taken in dissolved in water by the roots.
Nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium are the most important. Magnesium, iron, calcium and sulphur are also required.
Nitrogen - taken in as ammonium salts as organic compounds, used to make nucleic acids (DNA and RNA)
Phosphorous - taken in as phosphates, to make ATP (substance that stores energy in the cells)
Potassium - taken in as potassium salts, enables the transfer of mineral salts across the cell membranes.
Magnesium - taken in as magnesium salts, used to make chlorophyll
Iron - taken in as iron salts, component in the enzymes used to make chlorophyll.
Calcium - taken in as calcium salts, used for cell wall formation
Sulphur - taken in as sulphates, used to make protiens, for healthy root growth.
