April’s Perfect Partner: Salmon

Here at B Sow Healthy, we love creating recipes using the produce we grow at our site in West Yorkshire. Finding ingredients that offer the perfect pairing to our lovingly grown salad cress, pea shoots and microgreens is high on our priority list, and sharing the recipes we create with you, makes all the hard work worth it. So, this month, we are turning our attention to salmon, its health benefits and the tasty, nutritious dishes you can cook using this colourful fish.

Kicking things off, you won’t be surprised to hear that the health benefits of salmon are abundant, as an excellent source of high-quality protein, vitamins and minerals. Here are a couple of the fish’s fantastic nutritious properties:

  • Salmon provides potassium, selenium and vitamin B12, which work to maintain normal blood pressure, prevent cell damage and keep the nerve and blood cells healthy.
  • The fish is also known for its omega-3 content, thought to contribute towards healthy brain function while maintaining the heart and joints.

Not only is the fish healthy, it is incredibly versatile and there are lots of different ways that salmon can be enjoyed. Whether it be smoked, poached, roasted or grilled, the flavour of salmon complements the produce we grow perfectly. For example, smoked salmon often has an ‘oaky’ taste which works well with crisp, fresh flavours that have a little peppery kick. The texture of crunchy salad products nestled between waves of soft smoked salmon is a beautiful and well-loved combination, just check out our Smoked Salmon and Salad Cress Crème fraiche Melba Toast.

Although salmon certainly gets a big thumbs-up from us as a wholesome, nutritious food source, it is important to note that as with all fish consumption, sustainability is a major issue. Salmon is largely caught in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and the good news is several varieties of salmon are sustainable. To ensure you’re enjoying sustainable salmon products, just look for the blue MSC label on the packaging, which proves the product has come from a certified sustainable fishery.

Now you know how good salmon is for you when eaten as part of a healthy balanced diet, now’s the time to get preparing some fantastic, nutritious meals!
