Our philosophy

“Growing and promoting through diligence and respect” We are not just growing salad cress. We develop best practice: best practice in growing a quality product, in our dealings with each other, with our suppliers as well as our customers. The basis of that practice is care, attention and respect not just for each and every thing within the company but also for our environment and local community.

Our history

W. S. Bentley’s [Growers] Ltd started out in 1956 as a market garden producing and selling spring onions, beetroot and radishes.

In the early sixties salad cress was added to the list of produce and gradually took over the entire operation. In fact since 1972 we’ve concentrated our efforts and specialised in the production of salad cress.

Over forty years and three generations later our salad cress is in demand by supermarkets, wholesalers, distributors and caterers.

Convenient location

We’re based just 5 minutes from the M62 between Leeds and Bradford. It’s an ideal location for accessing the UK’s major motorway networks and allows us to transport our salad cress by road quickly and easily.

Salad cress is an extremely versatile product and can be used in many dishes or as garnish to decorate meals. In fact our salad cress is enjoyed:

• In the home - purchased from greengrocers or supermarkets who buy from us at W.S. Bentley
• Eating out - pubs, coffee shops, restaurants purchase our salad cress from wholesalers, distributors or catering suppliers
• In ready prepared meals or sandwiches – supermarkets, large caterers, distributors and sandwich makers purchase direct

Investing in high standards

Quality control plays a vital role in ensuring we provide our customers with high quality salad cress. To this end we’re accredited to the assured produce scheme, work to the British Retail Consortium (BRC) standard. Our systems are subjected to continuous evalutation based on HACCP (hazards analysis and critical control points).

We’re also an Investors in People accredited company and our experienced and trained team is always happy to help.
